Suta is the result of ardent love for sarees, affection for classic elegance and immense admiration towards weavers, makers and artisans. Suta, which means ‘thread’, is also a blend of the names of sisters-turned-entrepreneurs Su(jata) and Ta(niya) Biswas.
Two sisters, Sujata and Taniya, created a business based on their sheer passion and nostalgia. Launched in 2016, Suta is a contemporary ethnic wear brand for women who love to drape handwoven fabrics. Every product at Suta has a story and inspiration behind it, as their sarees always come with a unique personal touch. Today, the Suta family has crossed over 1500 weavers and artisans.
How did Suta start?
The story of Suta goes back to the childhood of Sujata and Taniya Biswas. The sisters recall their grandmother’s sarees that kickstarted their obsession. They were always mesmerized by their grandmother’s soft sarees which were hung to dry in their backyard where they used to play around hide and seek. Thereafter, it’s this love for sarees and the memories attached that inspired the two to renounce their corporate jobs and commence on this intriguing journey of handloom with Suta.

Together, the sarees, the stories, the sustainable ethos, the authentic origins, and the ‘dipped in love’ feel are what makes Suta not only special but also unique. Today, the small yet bold flicker of positivity has brought Suta family of more than 1500 weavers and artisans together.
Suta doesn’t follow trends, nor they have any pre-planned palettes, blouse themes or styles. Their designs are raw and uninhibited with a blend of tradition and contemporaneity which are inspired from stories and craft traditions of India.
Advice for other entrepreneurs who are just started or want to start?
The most important thing is to be open to learn and unlearn, to always be proactive and never lose focus and hope. Never assume that the market is cluttered or there’s no space for new business. There will always be a customer base who will actually admire your hard work. You should believe in what you’re doing, in the product you’re making and never be scared of hard work and consistency while believing in your dream.
